Building a connection to a song is a different process for everyone and for every song. For some it’s instantaneous, but for others it takes time to develop this attachment. Both are valid. The songs we’ve selected as our favorite Latin songs of the year (so far) are tracks that not only topped the Billboard charts or went viral on TikTok for an off-the-wall dance challenge, but made us feel some kind of way.
Some of the songs on the list thrive on an earworm chorus, the type you instantly connect with due to its catchiness. Take, for example, Camilo’s “Pegao,” a fun cumbia that on first listen gets stuck in your head and then leaves you singing “pegao, pegao, pegao.” Then there are songs that stand out for their ability to capture the zeitgeist of post-pandemic liberation. “Provenza,” powered by Karol G’s calypso, is an anthem that sings of the desire to feel a special connection, even if it means rekindling an old flame.
Then there are those who marked a moment in 2022 by leaving a good impression not only on us but on the whole industry. Up-and-coming sibling trio Yahritza y Su Esencia were on everyone’s mind after releasing their very first song, “Soy El Único.” The heartbreaking sierreño track peaked at No. 20 on the Hot 100, making 15-year-old Yahritza the youngest Latin performer to ever break the chart.
