The untimely death of singer Krishnakumar Kunnath (KK) after a concert in Kolkata on May 31 has shocked the film fraternity across India. He was 53 years old. Known as KK, he had sung tremendous hit numbers not only in Hindi but also in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and other languages.

KK had several major hits which became a part of Tamil pop culture.

He had sung the Tamil hit, ‘Appadi Podu’, from Ghillies in 2004, which became an all-India hit and was performed at clubs and weddings in remote areas.

Having started his singing career with AR Rahman in the 90s, KK’s first hit in Tamil was the evergreen song, ‘Kalloori Salai’, in Kadhal Desam (AR Rahman). Then came the hit ‘Strawberry Kanne’ from Minsara Kanavu composed by AR Rahman and featuring Prabhudeva, Arvind Swami and Kajol in 1997.

However, his collaborations with upcoming musical directors – Harris Jayaraj and Yuvan Shankar Raja – resulted in several major hits which became an inseparable part of Tamil pop culture in the 2000s.

The following decade saw KK deliver blow after blow. In 2001 he sang the pleasant ‘Love Pannu’ for Harris Jayaraj in the film 12Bfeaturing Simran and Jyothika.

He then continued with ‘Kadhal Oru Thani Katchi’ in actor Vijay’s Shahjahan and ‘Gundu Gundu Ponne’ from Dhool with Vikram and Jyothika.

In 2003 he had two big hits composed by Harris Jayaraj – ‘Uyirin Uyire’ by Kaakha Kaakha, a fast-paced song about love, which launched Suriya’s career as an action hero in his own right and the film’s ‘Kalyanam Dhaan Kattitkittu’ Sami, with Vikram and Trisha. While ‘Uyirin Uyire’ was a hit among the townspeople, the other was a hit all over Tamil Nadu.

KK also sang the hit ‘Kadhal Valarthen’, composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja from the movie, Manmadhan.

His association with Harris Jayaraj and Yuvan Shankar Raja resulted in two more hits – “Kadhalikkum Aasai” by Chellamey and the melodious, ‘Ninaithu Ninaithu’ of Rainbow Colony 7G.

He also sang ‘Annanoda Paatu’ in Chandramukhi, which was superstar Rajinikanth’s comeback movie after Baba.

In 2005, he once delivered a hit in ‘Andankaaka Kondaikaari’ in Anniyanagain composed by Harris Jayaraj.

KK also sang the pleasant “Pani Thuli” from Kanda Naal Mudhal.

After a long break, he lends his voice to the Legend Saravanan in the film The legend.
