Two lovable losers hatch a plan to make a quick buck off the faithful when they realize that making a hit Christian movie doesn’t require you to be a Christian or a filmmaker. This is the configuration for based on faithstarring Luke Barnett, Tanner Thomason, Margaret Cho, David Koechner, Lance Reddick and Jason Alexander, and the first trailer is a wild hoot, with our heroes Luke and Tanner wrapping their heads around the world of Christian cinema as they begin the production A prayer in space – which sounds pretty awesome, to be honest.
“Why are Christian movies so bad? they ask at one point. “They don’t have to be bad,” comes the response. “They just don’t have to be good.” Speaking as someone who has reviewed more of these films than he cares to admit, that seems like a fair assessment.
When based on faith was first announced in 2019, Fox News, the plot synopsis coalesced as the work of “Hollywood wannabes” that had provided them with “just one more example of how media culture America targets Christians as its favorite villains”.
Barnett, who wrote the film, told PERTINENT that Fox News failed to give them a chance. “I grew up in the church, my father is a pastor and [director] Vince is still incredibly active in his religious community,” he said. “I’m glad people are seeing this movie. It’s not a movie that makes fun of people who have faith, it’s a commentary on blindly supporting something.
