The public is invited to attend the Mechanicsburg Christian Church Memorial Day Service at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The church held the service for over a dozen years.
“Each year we hold a Memorial Day service at Mechanicsburg Cemetery on the Sunday afternoon before Memorial Day,” church pastor Tom Mauer said. “The point is to honor our dead on Memorial Day. It’s part of being a patriotic American. I think patriotism has value, and that’s why we do it.
Princeton violinist Kate Thyng will play patriotic music for the ceremony. Mauer will deliver the opening address, and members of the American Legion and Bland’s VFW will give a 21-gun salute and play “Taps” at the end of the service.
“It’s a community event; we invite everyone, regardless of religious affiliation, to be part of this event,” Mauer said. “We certainly appreciate the freedoms we have in this country, and we know that freedom doesn’t come free; many men and women lost their lives for our freedom. And that’s what it’s all about, honoring them.

“Only two people agreed to die for us — that is, Jesus Christ and the American soldier — and a service like this combines that very well,” Mauer said.
