New List Reveals Most Streamed Songs, By Year Released

Streaming is a relatively new addition to our lives, but it has undoubtedly transformed the music industry and is now how most people consume music these days.

With this in mind, the Official Charts Company has created a new list which marks the most streamed song (by year of release) since the UK’s Official Singles Chart was established in 1952.

It takes into account the number of streams generated by a particular song on major services such as Spotify and Apple Music.

The most streamed song in 1952, for example, was Gene Kelly’s “Singin’ in the Rain,” while the most streamed song in 2022 is Harry Styles’ “As It Was.”

Other notable tracks in the mix include Toploader’s “Dancing in the Moonlight” (2000), “What is Love?” by Haddaway. (1993), “Jolene” by Dolly Parton (1982), “Paint It, Black” by the Rolling Stones (1966) and “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley (1957).

In the 1980s, it’s easy to see which songs have enjoyed a renaissance since streaming began — including Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” and Toto’s “Africa.”

There are also a few surprises in the mix – notably The Kooks who scored the most streamed song of 2006 with their hit ‘Naive’.
