The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) led by Pastor Enoch Adeboye has set up a political office to support members willing to get involved in politics and “mobilize support for them where necessary”.
In a note to all regions, provinces, zones and other levels of the church, the mission said the leadership was created for the political education of its members.
The leadership, 9News Nigeria has learned, would also charge church members to obtain their permanent voter cards ahead of the 2023 general election.
The note dated February 28, 2022 and titled “Office of the Directorate of Policy and Governance” bears the reference number: RCCG/AGO/ADM/AA/MEMO/20/01/2022.
It was signed by the assistant general overseer for administration and personnel, Rev. John Odesola.
The memo read in part: “We are writing to formally inform you that the Mission Authority has established the Office of Policy and Governance Director at the RCCG. Additionally, Pastor Timothy Olaniyan (PICP Lagos Province 12) has been appointed to lead the Office.
“You are requested to appoint with immediate effect a provincial officer for your province and also to see that the same is done at all levels of the church – zone, region and parish. The essence of this leadership is to Help coordinate the engagement of our people who are ready to get involved in politics as well as mobilize support for them when needed.
The RCCG therefore requested that its parishes send the contact details of its designated coordinators for the office in Odesola within two weeks of receiving the letter.
According to the RCCG’s Media and Public Relations Officer, Pastor Olaitan Olubiyi said that the leadership must sensitize church members for active political participation.
He said: “One thing I know is that we have a policy and governance directorate to galvanize opinion and views to discuss issues as they arise. , not only in Nigeria but globally, because as Christians we cannot afford to act out of ignorance. This is to serve as a form of outreach (for those interested in politics) and to mobilize our people to sign up and play their own roles, collect PVCs. Those who are interested, join the political party of their choice.
