PLATTSBURGH – Unity Christian Church is the new name of an established house of faith in Plattsburgh.
“Technically, we have changed the name from New Jerusalem Baptist Church to Unity Christian Church,” said Bishop Don F. Ray, senior pastor.
“It was basically from different people telling us that they weren’t comfortable just coming to a Baptist church. We decided to have an outreach where different people would feel comfortable coming to the house of God over a denominational name.
Located at 83 Oak St., the Old New Jerusalem Baptist Church was founded in 1997 by Reverend Franklin Blanks.
Ray joined in 1998. The Louisville, Kentucky native was stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base in 1992 and remained there after it closed three years later. sergeant. Ray was assigned to the 380th Civil Engineer Squadron.
He and his wife, Darlene, raised their five children here.
“Bishop Blanks left in 2008 or 2009 or somewhere in there,” Ray said.
“I was made pastor in 2011. We still have a small congregation, but mostly we have a lot of virtual members supporting our church and everything. We cover Kentucky, Ohio, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Nevada, and even met a few friends in different countries.
Sunday school is at 9:30 a.m. and morning worship at 11 a.m.
Virtual services include a Tuesday prayer session at 5:30 p.m. and a weekly Thursday Bible study at 6:30 p.m.
“Both are virtual through Zoom,” Ray said.
“I had to learn all of this (the technology), and to be honest I know the basics, but I’m grateful to have people at church and my wife. They took it up and they ran with it. So I let them do all that. Virtual has really been a big help, I mean, getting the message out and stuff.
FOCUS ON THE COMMUNITY
In July, the church held a community barbecue with food, games and a day of fellowship.
“It’s just a local church, but we focus on community,” Ray said.
“We try to reach out to the different needs of people in the community and in the neighbourhood, our friends at the transition house next door. One of our members contacts veterinarians. So we’re just trying to reach out to those in our immediate area to let them know that we’re in the community to help or assist in any way.
